Unemployment is a privilege for those who can afford it and a curse for those desperately in search of work. Full-time employees sacrifice at least one third of their day to work, a routine punishment for people who hate their jobs. Commuting, getting ready for work, and winding down afterwards further eats away our time. The mortgage, car payments, insurance, debt, family, the _____________ demand our daily return, and rather than enabling us to enjoy the things we do or take pleasure from doing them, work confines and controls us. Calls to abolish work aim at the simultaneous destruction of the work-based economy and creation of an anti-capitalist and anti-hierarchical economy. The objective of such an anti-work economy is to allow maximum time for whatever people want to do without falling short of basic material needs.
The lyrics of if people aren’t working, what will they do? poke fun at the idea that people will doing nothing if they don’t have a job. The lyrics describe a situation in which a person has a job doing nothing at all and then I recorded music video for the song of myself without a job, but reading a book.
